[Salmson, Axel Jakob]
Hinrich. Hertig af Sachsen
[Stockholm] [Tr. hos Salmson & Ström. A. J. Salmson Lith] [1847 -1854] 32 x 24,5cm. Lithograph. A combination of lithochrome printing, hand colouring and tinting has probably been used.
Light offsetting from a text page. Very small losses in two corners. One corner repaired.
The plate was published in one of the most beautiful swedish plate books of the 19th. century "Rikssalen på Gripsholms Slott" (The National Hall at Gripsholm Castle), depicting paintings of the swedish king Gustavus I and his european contemporaries such as Elisbeth I, Henry VIII and Kristian II and others. The hand colouring and the lithochrome printing is of very high quality. Lithochrome printing is an early form of lithographic colour printing. Salmson pioneered colour printing in Sweden. Salmson and C. F. Ström opened a lithographic printing business in 1847. In1851 the companionship ended and Salmson continued by himself. In the early 1860s he had to leave the country because of financial problems. He settled in the USA. Scarce.
